The Presidential Council of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) began its sixth congress in Johannesburg on Feb. 9 with nearly 100 delegates and guests from five continents taking part. It was held under the theme of action “Capitalist Barbarism, Crisis and Imperialist Wars or Socialism”.
At the 10th National Congress of Vietnamese Trade Unions that was held in Hanoi from 3 to 5 November 2008, a new Executive Committee was elected with 160 members headed by Mr. Dang Ngoc Tung who was reelected to be VGCL President for the 10th Tenure (2008 - 2013). Five Vice Presidents of the VGCL were reelected namely Mr. Nguyen Hoa Binh, Mr. Hoang Ngoc Thanh, Mr. Mai Duc Chinh, Mr. Nguyen Van Ngang and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thu Hong. The Trade Union Law of 1990 was passed and promulgated at the early stage of the transitional period to a market economy in Vietnam. After more than 20 years of coming into force, many provisions are no longer suitable to today's reality and need supplement, revision.
